Over her career, she has used her expertise in nursing and education to advance inclusive learning environments, education equity and workforce diversity.

As a national consultant and speaker, Ackerman-Barger advocates for underserved and underrepresented groups in health professions. Her interdisciplinary work has been recognized through American Academy of Nurses fellowships. Her public service was honored by UC Davis in 2019 when she was awarded the UC Davis Charles P.
