A Message from the Vice Provost
September 2022
One of my favorite elements of public scholarship is engaging with people who inspire me to think differently. That’s why I’m excited to attend the Engagement Scholarship Consortium’s annual conference this month and showcase several programs with the PSE team and our partners.
First up is a workshop where PSE and our partners will share our research and strategies for creating university supports that recognize faculty scholarship. The workshop will include active assessment and reflection on institutional policies, and an opportunity to map out next steps.
Second is a panel discussion about our small grant program, which supports researchers working in partnership with groups outside the university. The Public Impact Research Initiative provides up to $10,000 for projects that offer mutual benefit to researchers and community partners. These grants encourage faculty to venture into new projects and support our mission to build meaningful relationships between communities and UC Davis scholars.
Lastly, we’re excited to join our campus and community partners in sharing the Sacramento Valley College Corps’ innovative community engagement approach. The SVCC is a student fellowship program that addresses barriers to experiential learning by compensating students for their work with public agencies, schools and non-profit organizations. It is also committed to ensuring reciprocity and mutual benefit for the communities in which student learning takes place.
On a personal note, I recently discussed some of these programs on Face to Face with Chancellor Gary May. I really enjoyed our conversation and appreciate his commitment to changing the culture around public engagement in higher education.
I’m happy to announce two new PSE team members. Becky Oskin joined us in June as director of communications. She has more than 20 years experience in public relations and journalism. And this month we welcomed Jessica Arthur to PSE as our new executive analyst. A UC Davis alumna, Jessica has a deep background in research, analysis, communication, event planning and executive support.
In community,
Michael Rios
