Igniting Innovation, Catalyzing Change

Over the past five years, PSE has established and expanded a suite of programs designed to integrate community engagement into the research and teaching mission of UC Davis. The following sections highlight the progress and impact of these programs, providing a clear view of how PSE has actively contributed to and shaped the landscape of public scholarship both locally and nationally.

What is Community Engagement?

Community engagement is a collaborative and reciprocal partnership between the university and an external community. It involves ongoing interaction and is characterized by mutual benefit, shared decision-making, and equitable outcomes. This approach prioritizes the exchange of knowledge and resources, fosters respectful relationships, and aims to address community and university needs while advancing the common good.

A community includes a variety of non-university entities, including nonprofit organizations, government agencies, tribal communities and Native Nations, businesses, groups, and individuals.

Welcome from Vice Provost Michael Rios

From its conception, Public Scholarship and Engagement (PSE) was envisioned as a catalyst for change — founded on the collective vision to weave community engagement into the fabric of UC Davis’s identity. This report captures the strides we’ve made, illuminating our efforts to recognize and reward publicly engaged research and teaching; facilitate collaborations across different units; advocate for institutional change; and deepen the university’s impact through mutually beneficial partnerships that have local, regional and global reach.

We are excited for PSE’s next phase that will strengthen and raise the visibility of community partnerships, document and communicate the university’s collective impact, and increase the national and international reputation of UC Davis as a leader in public scholarship and community engagement.
